        Geography

  • The Province of Entre Ríos is located in the central-eastern region of the Argentine Republic, with an area of 78,781 km². It is bordered on the north by the Province of Corrientes, on the east by the Eastern Republic of Uruguay, on the south by the Province of Buenos Aires and on the west by the Province of Santa Fe. Geographically it forms part of the Argentine Mesopotamia and integrates politically together with the Provinces of Córdoba and Santa Fe, the Central Region. Of special relevance for the MERCOSUR, Entre Ríos becomes important due to its strategic geographical position, which includes an obligatory passage in the northeastern axis of the Argentine Republic with Brazil and the east-west axis comprised by the Bioceanic Corridor linking Uruguay and Chile.

      Topography

  • Entre Ríos occupies an undulating plain that is interrupted in the north and along its eastern and western margins by forested, hilly ridges. The province tapers in the south into the Paraná deltaic lands of the northwestern Río de la Plata estuary. As reflected in its name, the province denotes the strong presence of water channels that have determined its geographical demarcation and influenced its economy. The two main ones, the Paraná and the Uruguay, agglutinate the most important towns in their coasts.

      Climate

  • The province’s climate is divided in two regions: the larger one is located in the south and is warm and temperate, with average temperatures of 10º C in the winter and 26º C in summer, and an annual rainfall averaging 1000mm. The smaller region to the north is considered subtropical and humid, presenting a reduced thermal amplitude: mild winters have average temperatures of 13º C, and summers report temperatures that hover around 27º C. The annual precipitations average the 1300mm.

      Population Characteristics

  • Entre Ríos has an approximate population of 1,236,000 inhabitants, distributed in 17 departments, 78 municipalities and 169 communes, making it the seventh most populous province out of the country’s 23. With an average population density of 15.77 inhabitants / km², it denotes a marked upward trend from the center of the territory towards the margins of the Uruguay and Paraná Rivers, and is especially concentrated in the Paraná Department where the density reaches 68.3 hab / km² and in the Concordia Department with 52.2 hab / km².

  • The region’s literacy rate reaches 97.9 percent with a very high Human Development Index (HDI) of 8.39, according to data from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
